Gasoline stain on black paint - how to remove?

    Hello:

New to this group and appreciate any help you can offer. I bought a Honda 750 motorcycle with what appears to be a stain on the gas tank from gas spillage. The photo is attached to this post.

Short of repainting the tank, (a major undertaking) can anyone offer any tips on diminishing the stain?

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to DC ...
    Man that looks ugly ...
Here would be my approach as I always like to start out with the least abrasive product first.
Unless you have a buffer I would use a soft cotton towel or diaper.
Dampen it slightly with water and try rubbing back and forth with:
Klasse AIO or Poorboys Pro Polish or Poorboys Pro Polish with Carnuba
    If this doesn`t work try:
Meguiars Swirl Remover 2.0 or Poorboys SSR1
    If this doesn`t work try:
Meguiars Dual Action Cleaner Polish or Meguiars Scratch-X or Poorboys SSR2
You could then go more abrasive or take the tank to a local paint shop for their recomendation on how to fix ... of course that might be your best first step.
    Good luck!

I agree with Kim on the plan of attack. It looks like the gas has eatten threw the clear if there is one. If not and you are dealing with single stage paint, then what Kim has said will help to remove a layer of paint. The way to see if its sinlge stage paint is take a rag with some polish and rub if the color of the paint comes off on the rag then you have single stage paint.

    Welcome,

Judging from the looks of the paint in the photo, it appears it might have a case of "lacquer checking." If you look up close and it resembles the skin on the back of your hand, kinda porous and cellular, it will need to be re-painted. If this is the case, when wax is applied, it will be nearly impossible to remove it from the crackling areas and you will definitely notice the checking.

I hope this isn`t the case...

Either way though, please let us know if the above method works and do post some "after pics"
