Double Sided Wool Buffing Pads "How long is too long?"

    Hi Everyone!
We at the Edge Pad company would very much appriciate your professional opinons. How many buffs do you expect to get out of a single sided wool pad? How many for a double sided wool pad? We ask because unlike the foam which actually wears down and you can see is shrinking in size and thickness, the wool pads do not. With a wool pad the threads become untwisted to the point that they are no longer "cutting" and the usefulness of the pad becomes nullified. The hairs also become very flattened and require additional pressure by the operator to acomplish the same cutting performance that the operator was expecting. This creates a dangerous situation where you create swirl marks, burn the paint, or break the plate inside the pad. While the pad still looks like there is alot of meat, in reality the pad is worn out. We want to know how many buffs the user expects to get for the price they pay. For instance if you buy one of our double sided wool pads from www.premiumautocare.com for $18.95 and you get 20 cars per side, the pad would last for 40 buffs. Your cost per car would be $0.47cents. We think this is a great deal but what we think does not matter. What do you think?

I`d say that`s acceptable. I rarely use wool (mostly on light colored vehicles going to auction or after wetsanding) so a 40 use wool pad at .47c per use isn`t bad at all.

I like that cost per use, but to tell you the truth, I`ve "heard" that foam is better for the products we use today. :dunno

I still love the idea of the Edge 2000---almost makes me want to go out and get a Makita just to use those pads. :rolling

Sure does sound like a great deal you`re offering.

For me, there are two kinds of wool pads... those made of synthetic or natural fibers but looking something like 70`s shagg carpet (for use in cutting) or the real deal lambs wool polishing pads (like the seat covers) used for light polishing.

With todays modern paints, and clear coats ranging only 2-3 mils thick using cutting pads, in my opinion, can more often than not, cause more harm than good. I still use these on occasion, but few and far between. "Work smarter not harder" is more my motto today. Back in the day though, when Lacquer was still legal in the lower 48. I used to wash the pads at the end of each day, spin them to dry in a bucket, and easily get 30+ details out of a single sided BAF 9."

A 9" Lambs Wool polish pad (which I use more often than a cutter) will last for about 6-8 cars before I flip it to the backside for a doubled up pad.

For me what would be nice is to find waffle pads like 3M`s for a realistic price.

I am thinking to buy edge 2000 or just classic. I have used LC pads and they are alright but the idea of flat pad does not apply to LC. If talking about Wool I agree with dr_detail also the slit is not make me happy. For one stage paint they work perfect, the pad does not clogging up as bad as foam. I used wool on one stage paint and get about 12-10 decent condition cars. Also can`t wait to see what “Evolution” is going to be. By the way when they are going to come out?
    Thanks Dimedrol

The Edge: Ive visited your guys` site to learn more about what the `edge` pads do, how they are different and more specifically, how your easy bolt-on, boltoff works. I can tell you that im very impressed, and would definately invest in a product like that. However, with that being said (and with the fact that i just ordered a 7424 DAP), and correct me if im wrong, but im not aware if your products are compatable with this polished/buffer. Perhaps if you offered something similar to the `edge` technology you have on other model buffers/polishers it would increase your potential clientelle.

As far as the durability/cost of the wool pads, $.47 per use sounds very reasonable as long as the quality remains consistant, as you claim. The biggest aspect of what your company and its products offer in my opinion is the fact that there is a quick connect/disconnect, and even more so the fact the all the pads are double sided.

As mentioned before though, if you guys can become more versatile in the type of buffing equipment that can use `the edge` technology on it....i would assume you would increase potential clients (due the the large number of detail enthusiats/professional detailers who own 7424`s, and do not feel comfortable using anything else).

Hope this helps as far as feedback.

Testing new products always entices me and I too love the concept of the quick disconnect combined with self centering.

Will I need the quick disconnect though to use these pads, and do they come in a 9" version?

I find that I am using less wool pads than I used to however I find that when I am using them I have a hard time removing all the maring from the wool.

I have used the edge2000 system foams but havent used their wool pads yet.

I have done around 10 cars with the edge2000 foams and they still look and feel new. I think the doublesided wool is a good idea and will be trying it as soon as I order new stock,
