    waxes on clearcoats

I have been told you should never wax over the new clearcoats. I have a new 4x4 which will see some rough conditions and i want to protect the paint whats the skinny. Thanks

    Hey there,

Glad to see ya here at DC...Welcome!

I would think that waxing over the clearcoat would help protect it.
Since the clearcoat isn`t very thick...it would need to be protected.

I see an awful lot of neglected paint on vehicles that I detail...and I think "If only they would have took better care of their paint".

IMO, a vehicle needs to have some kind of protection, whether it is a wax or a sealant.

Every car made within the last 5 years has a clear coat or something similar. On all the new cars that I detail, I use a polish first and t hen wax. Dealerships do not do that great a job finishing the cars when you pick them up. The polish is designed to smooth out the clear coat and take off anything that might be on there such as rail dust. The wax will do the rest.

The only thing I might add, is that you wouldn`t want to wax a clearcoat that wasn`t completely cured. I would say wait at least one month before working with any new surface.
