    Question 1981-Porsche 911 Targa

Hi everybody, I have a few questions about an upcoming car next week. Its a 1981 911 with the Targa top. I have never done a Porsche and the input form more experienced detailers would be welcomed. I appreciate anything you might suggest.

The car is in great shape with only 70k miles on it. The car does have a few flaws though that I am concerned about how to tackle.

The Targa top, what do you suggest for dressing the vinvl top with? Would a good interior type of dressing work or do you give it something more suited for an exterior?

Also the paint is an issue. I have no education regarding the paints on older Porsches. I do not know what type of paint they used for these and how best to approach it. Its called Dark Metallic Blue. I was wanting to know what methods/products you prefer for working on a Porsche this age? I am counting on having to rotary buff some small scratches out and a wax to finish off would be fine. Before I start buffing this thing I want to consider what special considerations I should take there are if any.

Another thing is the area behind the Targa top that the rear window attaches to. This is the bar that is right behind and above the passengers heads. It appears to have been painted a flat black originally. It has since oxidized and turned a chalky grey. I know that some dressings can give this a rich black look for a little while but will soon start to fade away leaving a lousy looking mess that will forever require a dressing to be applied. As a matter of fact I know that the original owner claimed he would use Armor All to give it a black look everytime he washed it. I would like to know what any of you have done for this problem.

I want to educate myself on this vehicle before I work with it since its a new car for me to work on. The car is in beautifull condition for its age and has been garage kept all these years. It will become a regular car that I will maintain from now on.

I appreciate any replies you can give me and I thank you all for your input.

    Best regards,
    John
