Default winter cleaning

Hi, Just wondering if it is advisable to clean leather if it is really cold outside. I just bought a BMW 328is and cleaned the leather using Mothers leather cleaner and a soft sponge applicator. My car is parked inside the garage but when I was applying the cleaner my hands were starting to freeze. It was -9 C outside, I live in Toronto. Have been using Mothers polishes for years, this is the first time I have had a leather interior. Thanks.

The use of detailing products at freezing temperatures should be avoided, most certainly, as effectiveness is diminished.

If possible, try saving any detailing duties for a warm day, or when you have a heated garage available -- a space heater should help, as likely somewhere in the 50 degrees (F) should be adequate.

Thanks for the quick reply its awesome. Will follow your advise, was concerned that the leather may have been harmed in some way??? Just went out and bought some conditioner to be applied later, temperatures permitting.

There shouldn't be any harm to the leather itself, unless you see spotting from the product freezing on the surface, and likely you could work that out in a warmer environment. Liquid products of all types just don't work right at those extreme temperatures, plus likely you'll damage or diminish the effectiveness of the product at those temperatures even during the short time it leaves the bottle and it hits the surface.

Also, the leather surface is less pliable when cold, and thus it's more difficult to clean in the nooks and crannies.

An alternative would be to clean the leather while in the car and the interior warm (not hot), but that would likely be very cumbersome.

Worthy of note: store all of your car care products in the house during freezing temperatures, as most have warning labels against freezing, which can cause separation of ingredients and other bad things.

And about the only car care product I can think of that likely would be least likely to have a problem being used in those temperatures is our Glass Cleaner, which contains a fair amount of alcohol.

you shouldn't have a problem cleaning the leather in the winter time , try using nitrile gloves put the conditioner in your palms and apply to leather , then if necessary buff off the access
oh and before i forget enjoy that fun ride , by the way what colour is the exterior?
