A build-up would be indicated by a more "wet" or "glossy" look.. not always desired on interior surfaces such as dasboards due to potential for reflection. In such cases, buff with a plush cotton terry towel, if necessary, to achieve desired appearance.

Preserves Protectant - which is now simply called Protectant - is a dressing, not a cleaner. Ideally, if there is dirt or old dressing on the surface, you should clean it first before apply fresh product. In the Mothers line, Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner works great for cleaning interior vinyl and plastic (as well as carpet). Pre-cleaning also applies for exterior use of dressings. For example, when using our Protectant on tires, we recommend using Tire & Rubber Cleaner on the the surface first.
