    What is a good glaze?

Hi all, haven`t posted in a while!

Got the front end of the Cobra painted about 3 months ago, and am going to get a clearbra put on here in the next month, before I start autocrossing.

Prior to the clearbra, I need to get it looking good, as I can`t touch it after that point.

I usually do my detail in this order:

    Clay
    Megs DACP (if required)
    Megs #9
    Klasse AIO
    Then Z #5 and #2

It gives a great look, and is very durable. However, it`s still missing that one step that gives it "depth."

What glaze do you like, and where in the process would I use it? Would the AIO just take it back down to pre-glaze step?

I`ve looked at the Menzerna FP and Poorboys compounds, but to be honest, I`m not quite sure what makes a compound a glaze!

    TIA,

You don`t want anything on that car (if it is the stick on kind clearbra) or it will not stick to your paint. I don`t think Poorboy`s makes a glaze....they make a Sealant.

I think the best you can do under a clear bra is to polish with a pure abrasive polish like FP - I think SSR1 probably falls in that category too. I guess it doesn`t have to be abrasive just non-residual. Anything that relies on the oils it leaves behind will not help. The first step in applying the bra is to remove everything from the surface of the paint. So the shine you get with a pure polish is your best bet. I think that the clear bra though will still take sealants, glazes and waxes very well so you can shine it up over the clear film.

So - there is the poorboys ssr`s - I thought those were technically a polishing compound, and not a glaze?

The menzerna products - are the IP and FP both glazes? Could one be worked into my routine?

Does megs make anything good for this purpose?

Adam`s polishes has a product called "Brilliance" and from what I hear it`s a real good glaze. I`ve never really had a chance to even open my bottle... been too fascinated with poorboy`s.

I love Brilliance!! I use that stuff everywhere.

As for your situation--IP and FP are exactly what they are----POLISHES

Poorboy`s SSR 1 and 2 are also POLISHES, whereas SSR3 is a POLISHING COMPOUND

Meg`s Show Car Glaze and Adam`s Brilliance are GLAZES

I would stop at Meg`s #9 if you are satisfied with the results, then apply the clearbra.....if you glaze, it will not bond properly.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Nick - so what then are the differences between polishes and glazes? Fillers and oils? I know #9 leaves oils and fillers, so that`s why I follow it up with AIO before applying any synthetic sealant.

Mirror - I`ve heard good stuff about that product - but i`m still a little confused as to the difference between a glaze and polish.

    Kincade,

You`re not alone as some would consider #7 both a glaze and a polish.

That`s a good question - in my mind I consider a glaze to be anything that leaves oils and fillers in an attempt to fill in imperfections in the paint. I don`t think that`s an easy thing to determine!!

But I think for purposes of going under a clearbra, any thing that meets my definition of a glaze will not be as effective as a something that leaves nothing on the paint. Only because the first thing you do in applying a clear bra is strip all wax and oils off the paint with chemicals.

dalmore I would think you would not want to leave anything under the clear bra.....(fillers/oils)
SSR1 would give the glossy look but leave no fillers:dunno
