Default Protectant

detailed a clients car approx 1 month ago. its a 2010 VW jetta. on the hard plastics of the door trims, i have used protectant. on the tops of all 4 door trims, along the windows & down approx. an inch, there is a white powdery substance & the black trim has faded. below the arm rest is the same plastic, protectant also used but is fine.
can anyone tell me why this has happened? i have used protectant for years on many makes & models of cars & i have never seen this before
any help greatly appreciated

Do you think Protectant caused this issue? I would suspect something else has been used on the plastic or the base plastic just has degraded. I have seen some all purpose cleaners leaving a white substance.

Post a picture.

Having used protectant on many cars, I highly doubt the protectant caused this, however it has had a reaction to some other chemical, but what?? I have detailed this vw twice. First time was all good, 2nd time client said after a week the white powdery residue appeared.

Photos would be helpful.

I'd simply try a cleaner in a test spot and see if it cleans up.

If the surface is heavily textured, and too much product remained, it may have collected dust or simply dried and left a residue.

And being in your climate in Queensland, after 4-5 years, fading might not be unheard of depending on how much exposure the vehicle gets, and it would coincide with the affected area.
